Blondies Sports
212 West 79th St
(Between Broadway and Amsterdam)

Last week I went to Blondies Sports in Manhattan. I was starving, hoping to get some delicious sliders while Alfredo was craving Buffalo wings as usual.

The place is divided into two sections, a bar and restaurant area. Vibe was nice. Good crowd at the bar, but the tables in the restaurant felt too cluttered. I could’ve slipped into someone’s pocket while walking by to our table.

The waitress was friendly, but forgetful. When I wanted to make my order, she was no where to be found. We even had another waitress help us. Alfredo got his Buffalo wings and enjoyed them to the fullest. I asked for sliders, but without cheese. The waitress said, “Um, they come with cheese… cause they’re, like, pre-cooked…” I should have known better, but my stomach was about to explode. I politely said it was OK. When I got my sliders… the horror.

Of course they were pre-heated because frozen foods at the supermarket are! They had the audacity to serve me frozen microwavable White Castle cheeseburgers. I couldn’t believe my beautiful eyes. It looked icky and soggy. I was starving and frustrated, but the starvation won out. So, I ate the burgers with as much enjoyment as I possibly could.

According to Alfredo, they serve “one of the best” Buffalo wings. Too bad their sliders suck.

Never Again.

I’ve joined the following fanlistings:

It wasn’t until the past two years that I’ve watched television shows and followed a series if I enjoyed it enough. With the help of Ninja Video and Netflix, I’ve been able to watch old shows and catch up on new ones.

TV Shows

Dexter » Dysfuntional

I started watching Dexter last fall after noticing friends on Facebook raving about it. I was too late to catch up by the season premiere as the show was already on its fourth season. I began watching the pilot and found myself playing the next episode immediately after. Dexter is a clever show. There’s nothing like it on television. His deranged inner thoughts are hilarious. As you listen to his thoughts, you laugh at the expense of the other characters’ ignorance. Dexter’s fellow co-workers are amusing to watch as they attempt to solve crimes he may already have figured out. Some of them you love; others you hate. But that may change. There are great layers to each character throughout the seasons. Though Dexter kills people, he abides by a specific code that limits it to criminals. He may be performing murder, but for some strange reason, you find yourself not wanting him to get caught. I introduced my mom to the show and she finished it before I did! It’s definitely a must-see and I can’t wait for the fifth season airing this fall.

TV Shows & Characters: TV

Buffy the Vampire Slayer » Slayer’s Empire
Buffy Summers » Just A Girl
Faith Lehane » Five By Five
Glory » She’s A God
Rupert Giles » The Watcher
Willow Rosenberg » Magical
Xander Harris » Heart

I had seen the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I didn’t follow the television show that was based off it. Occasionally I’d watch an episode if I came across it. I wasn’t a hardcore fan. I didn’t remember much from the show besides that Faith was a badass and I loved her. Other than that, I assumed it was a cheesy show until recently. I began watching the show from season one two months ago. To my surprise, the writing is smart, the jokes are clever, and the Scooby Gang (main characters) are lovable. I don’t think people realize how great this series is. Though it’s based on fiction, like vampires, the personal events and relationships the characters experience, especially Buffy, are realistic. The show uses the experiences of Buffy, Willow, and Xander to provide thoughtful lessons viewers can identify with and make the characters seem like a familiar friend or even yourself. The show’s target audience were teenagers and young adults, and I thought the story-lines were an added bonus to its entertainment. I’m currently on season six and sad it’s almost coming to an end.

Characters: TV

Callisto » Twisted
Gabrielle » Warrior Bard

Xena the Warrior Princess was one of the few shows I followed while growing up. During one weekend at my sister’s house, she and her boyfriend were watching Xena. After that episode, I was hooked. I tried to wake up on time every Sunday morning to watch it. I used to think Xena was so cool and even imitated her. Then during middle school, I watched re-runs every evening on TBS. Lately I’ve started from season one to gather the story line from the beginning. Similar to Buffy, Xena is a strong female, moral, and can handle her business. I suppose that’s why these characters are so intriguing. There aren’t many like them. They have charisma, a sense of humor, and can kick ass. I love it.

I had to watch a 30 Rock episode to soothe my brain. This is all a little overwhelming. Like any new ambitious adventure, there are steps needed to reach the end… or goal.

I’m organizing the terms of use (rules sort of thing), how the ordering process will go, and other things just so everything can run as smoothly as possible. I like being prepared. I wasn’t able to do any of this before because of studies. And with work and summer classes coming up, it may be a hassle. Bear with me.

I’m also working on a revamp for Gibbo Fan. The hilarious hot mess of a webmistress at Poor Britney got me inspired. She’s funny, smart, and friendly to everyone, even yours truly. With brief talks here and there, I’ve been inspired to change Gibbo Fan up. It will be more of a blog, rather than a mere fansite. I’ve gotten tired of copying and pasting articles. In the past, I’ve felt a little apprehensive about including my own opinions and comments to any post. But dammit, it’s my site. I paid for it. This stuff ain’t cheap, people! Anyway, look forward to that. I think even non-Mel fans will enjoy it.

If you’d like a design: WordPress theme, MySpace layout (bands only), YouTube or Twitter layout… feel free to let me know. I’m still taking orders and replying to requests that I may be able to fulfill at this time. Just send an e-mail to designs[at]blessed-beauty.net!

At the beginning of 2010, I was determined to get out of New York City by some means and for any length of time. People may be surprised how a person could get sick of this place. There is so much beauty and many wonderful places to explore in NYC, but it can get so congested and tiring. I’m used to the fast-pace environment. I walk fast just like my father. I usually go straight from point A to point B. I get to my destination and rarely observe what’s around me. After living here for so long, there’s not much to observe anymore that’s unusual. I wanted a fresh new place to wander around.

I went to visit Jaddy for a weekend in late April. The ride there wasn’t fun; almost traumatizing. Besides that, the visit was fantastic. Every thing is preserved and cherished. Everyone is polite. Even the guys that hit onto you! It’s so gorgeous and quiet there. This one man told us his family has been in Salem for generations and were Quakers. Of course, I bought a ton of souvenirs from his shop. There was an enthusiasm in people that I haven’t really seen in New Yorkers for a long time besides from tourists. It takes tragedy or a World Series to get them going. Even I take the city for granted at times.

When I returned home, there was an ache inside me that I didn’t understand at first. I sat in the tub thinking. I really missed Jaddy, her family, and Salem. I was so content and comfortable there. It was like a whole weight was lifted from me during that weekend. Every single sight got me excited and wishing I could share the experience with someone. I kept thinking, “I wish they were here to see this.” Perhaps the easygoing atmosphere, less people to bump into, and no tall buildings to clutter my presence just happened to put me at ease.

Jaddy explained that though people typically think of tragedy when they hear “Salem”, the word actually means peace. And that was exactly what I felt there. Suppose that’s just part of visiting a new place on vacation — every other place is fascinating… but I adore that town. Even though bars close at 12:30… I could work with that. Hanging out until 4, 5, 6 in the morning is getting tired. It’s fun times and awesome memories, but I’d prefer a less predictable routine. New York City never sleeps, and Las Vegas, of course. But goodness, I want to sleep. I want to lay back and enjoy the sights. I want less people, too. I want to go somewhere without the fear of being mobbed or accidentally sharing DNA with someone. Plus, if there was a zombie takeover, less people would increase my chances for survival.

I guess this is partly why I’ve always longed to go to California. But Salem is a great as well. I know if I ever moved away, I would miss my loved ones and the city-life… The convenience that is public transportation, Times Square, the Village, familiar neighborhoods, memories, family, friends… it goes on. But a girl’s gotta explore a bit, don’t cha think?

Title: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Release Date: May 28, 2010

My very first movie-going experience in Puerto Rico was Prince of Persia with Paul. It’s distracting to watch a movie with Spanish subtitles, or any subtitles for that matter. I remember playing the game a few times, but mostly watched others play it. Though I don’t have much patience to be a gamer, I did like it. This little review is coming from someone who has no idea about the original game plot!

Prince of Persia is adventure from start to finish, and I loved it. There were cool graphics and great humor. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Jake Gyllenhaal. I would say he was the highlight. He had some awesome moves. The interaction between Dastan and Tamina is rather entertaining — not too wacky or mushy. Overall, it has enough for the guys and girls. Definitely a fun movie to watch… unless there’s some important plot points it’s missing from the movie. In that case, you might be pissed.

Title: Killers

Release Date: June 4, 2010

Paul and I went to see Killers with his friends Jose and Yolanda in PR. The movie actually surprised me. I didn’t expect it to be as funny and smart as it was. I even brought my mom to watch it this past Tuesday.

Despite rumors of how much of a bitch Katherine Heigl is on set, she’s able to play very likable characters. I suppose that’s good actings skills. Ashton Kutcher is funny, as usual, but I noticed some maturity, which is great. Catherine O’Hara is a treasure while playing a drunken mother.

If you’re not entirely aware of the plot, you will be in for an amusing surprise like I was. Killers is a great laugh, fun, and a lot of action. Also, not too mushy.

Title: Get Him to the Greek

Release Date: June 4, 2010

Awkward.

If I could best describe this movie, it would be all in that word right there. My mom and I saw Get Him to the Greek right before Killers. I don’t blame her for falling asleep several times through it. Killers played a saving grace for our movie outting.

There are moments of genuine humor, but it’s mostly incredibly awkward. I went into the theatre with a completely different plot in mind. I assumed the main character, Aaron Green (Johan Hill), was experiencing life troubles and was suggested to seek help by the cool guy in town, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand), who just so happens to be Greek. Yeah, very strange, but so much for educated guesses.

Aaron works for a record label and hopes to resurrect his idol’s career. So, his mission is to get Aldous to the Greek Theater in Los Angeles from London within three days. Sounds simple enough, right? Of course it has to be one of the hardest things to do when you’re dealing with an incompetent drunk and drugged up rock star. Some of the journey is amusing, but it mostly got an uncomfortable smirk out of me. I suppose it’s for people with a certain kind of… humor.

Artist: Christina Aguilera
Album: Bionic
Release Date: June 8, 2010
Record Label: RCA

I haven’t done one of these in a long while.

After releasing a greatest hits album with a few new tracks like Keeps Getting Better, Christina claimed her forthcoming album would contain a futuristic sound. In her last album, Back to Basics, Christina channeled Billie Holiday, sang jazzy and soulful melodies, and even included a circus theme. I didn’t dig the over-the-top album. It felt too ambitious and unaccomplished. There were several enjoyable tracks, but I never played it in its entirety.

During the promotional tour for Bionic, Christina endured a lot of flack and comparisons to Lady Gaga and Madonna. She was dubbed as a copy-cat and unoriginal. Though there are blatant Human Nature and Express Yourself imitations in the music video for the album’s leading single Not Myself Tonight, I didn’t see much of Lady Gaga. After all, “Lady Gaga didn’t invent dance-pop” as one YouTuber ranted. As if the comparisons weren’t bad enough press, Christina’s dry and monotone personality during interviews made many perceive her as obnoxious, even to me. Despite the ridicule, I loved Not Myself Tonight and was hoping Bionic would surpass all the negative criticisms.

The melodies of the first several tracks are fun upbeat electronic songs. Her collaboration with M.I.A. is evident in Elastic Love with an 80′s vibe while Christina’s vocals in the ballad I Am are reminiscent of Bjork’s style. The album slows down midway with ballads like Sex for Breakfast, Lift Me Up, and All I Need that are beautiful and soothing. I couldn’t help but think of Janet Jackson’s classic ballads from the 90′s while listening to them.

The last three tracks are a nice boost of energy with female anthems like I Hate Boys, My Girls, Vanity. While I do enjoy the up-tempo beats, I could not stand the lyrics; “I’m not cocky. I just looove myself, … bitch!” The lyrics remind listeners of why Christina receives criticisms of being vain and obnoxious. She comes off as trying too hard and the overuse of “bitch” doesn’t help either. It’s this kind of attitude in some songs by Christina, Beyonce, and the Pussycat Dolls that irritate the hell out of me. There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance.

Bionic is like a combination of many inspirations rather than a lazy attempt at replicating others. Although this is not my favorite pop album, it is the first album by Christina that I’ve been able to enjoy without the need of skipping many tracks. It’s a great balance of electronica, pop, dance and ballads that showcase her amazing talent. Not exactly impressive as Stripped, but definitely not a snooze-fest like Back to Basics.

Favorite Tracks: Bionic, Elastic Love, and All I Need.

Least Favorite: Woohoo, Glam, and Vanity.
